Wood as a local engine: Araño hosts the third transformation day of the Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory

This Saturday, May 10, the third day of wood transformation in Rianxo will be held at the Campo da Festa do Araño, framed within the activities of the Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory
and organized by the Plataforma pola Defensa do Monte, in collaboration with the Common Land Communities of Araño and Baroña, and the Cultural Association ‘A Carballeira de Baia’.

May 8, 2025 – This Saturday, May 10, the third day of wood transformation in Rianxo will be held at the Centro cultural A Capela in Araño. The initiative is organized by the Plataforma pola Defensa do Monte (PDM), in collaboration with the common land communities of Araño and Baroña, and the Cultural Association ‘A Carballeira de Baia’.

This day is part of a cycle of events promoted by the Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory to promote the use of local wood and make its transformation visible in the territory itself. It will feature demonstrations of forestry machinery, a discussion with industry professionals, and a presentation of the Laboratory’s advances in sustainable ‘monte’ management.

Series of Laboratory events to promote the short-cycle timber industry.

At the first of these events, held on April 22 in Leiro (Rianxo), the Baroña Common Land Community’s mobile sawmill demonstrated its capacity to process local wood. More than 50 people participated in the event, including students and teachers from the employment workshops in Ribeira, Porto do Son, and Boiro. During the event, residents of Rianxo brought wood for live processing, highlighting the short-cycle timber industry. Asunción Piñeiro, tutor of the forestry workshop in Tahume, noted: “It was a very positive experience; the students were delighted to see practical applications of their training.”

The second day was also held in Leiro, focusing on the processing of wood from the Common Land Communities to improve infrastructure for livestock. This activity highlighted the potential of local wood to create practical and sustainable solutions, highlighting community work and the direct use of ‘montes’. Rafael Saco, president of the PDM, underscored the importance of the initiative, stating that “it is essential to invest in new production and the processing of wood in the ‘montes’ themselves, with the aim of improving local use and highlighting the resources of each community.”

This third day in Araño seeks to consolidate this work by promoting knowledge about local wood processing and its sustainable use. A practical experience helps in understanding the complete small-scale wood cycle: from production in new plantations, to wood processing in the mobile sawmill, to its final use in livestock fences, furniture, and even traditional boats.

During the event, there will be a gastronomic area with options for lunch or snacks, creating a festive meeting space for all attendees.

Colloquium “Wood: from the Mountain to the Sea”

The colloquium will feature professionals involved in wood processing and community ‘monte’ management, who will seek to highlight sustainable and community management models while exploring new ways to use wood in the region.

Among them will be Ramón Collazo, a riverside carpenter and president of the Galician Association of Riverside Carpentry (AGALCARI), who has promoted the use of local wood in the construction of traditional boats from the Estaleiro Catoira in Rianxo. Also present will be Rodrigo Mosquera, a craftsman cabinetmaker and founder of TresOficios, recognized for his work on unique solid wood pieces and for his defense of traditional construction systems.

Community forest management will be represented by Ovidio Queiruga, president of the Baroña Common Land Communities and promoter of the mobile sawmill, a key tool for closing the timber production cycle in the ‘monte’ itself. He will also be joined by Emilio Saborido, president of the O Fieitoso Common Land Community in Taragoña and a forestry sector professional with extensive experience in the sustainable processing and use of wood.

Finally, Pepe Suárez, from the Hijos de Vicente Suárez sawmill, a company with over 20 years of experience specializing in raft wood, will speak. This is a prominent example of the circular economy and the valorization of local resources.
