Baroña hosts a new workshop on sustainable wood use as part of the Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory

The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory is organizing a community foresight workshop in Baroña to collectively imagine the future of its ‘montes’ and define concrete actions to make it a reality. The activity is coordinated by the Montescola Foundation, responsible for designing this innovative methodology within the project.

March 21, 2025 – Within the framework of the “Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory: A Living Laboratory for Multifunctional Management and Collective Territorial Stewardship,” training and awareness-raising work for technicians, ‘comunidades de montes’, and the general public continues with a new demonstration day focused on wood and its sustainable use.

The event will be held on Saturday, March 29, at the Baroña Forestry House in Porto do Son, which will host a workshop focused on the forestry sector. The program will allow the public to gain insight into this field, learn about its processes, and understand the importance of forest management that meets the needs of artisans and professionals in the sector.

This activity is part of Action 3 of the Laboratory project, coordinated by the Plataforma pola Defensa do Monte, in collaboration with the Baroña Common Land Community, which is making its portable sawmill available as a key tool for the refinement of local wood and the recovery of a sustainable forest management model. Both entities are collaborating to promote a future in which wood and its processing contribute to local wood-based development.

One of the highlights of the event will be the participation of Timber Tools, the official distributor of Logosol, which will travel from Valencia to offer a display of forestry machinery, present the latest developments in portable sawmill technology, and offer specialized technical advice, in addition to exclusive discounts during the event. There will be two demonstration sessions: one at 10:00 a.m. for technicians and professionals and another at 4:00 p.m. for the general public.

The colloquium “From ‘Montes’ to Industry” will begin at 12:00 p.m., in which professionals from the wood sector will share their experience and vision in the form of short presentations, followed by a round of questions open to the public. The objective is to promote the maintenance of traditional knowledge and practices that, although at risk of disappearing, represent a truly green and circular economy rooted in the territory. Participants will include:

  • Francisco M. Romero González | Maderas Romero Cambeiro: a company with more than 60 years of experience in wood processing, currently dedicated to the production of pallets. Their vision will provide an industrial perspective of the wood sector in Galicia.
  • José Manuel Silva Ferreira | Silva Forestal: forester and president of the Xuño Common Land Community, with extensive experience in community forest management and use. He will represent the perspective of professionals working in logging and timber extraction.
  • Ramón Collazo Mosquera | Catoira de Rianxo Shipyard: renowned shipwright and president of the Galician Shipwright Association (AGALCARI). He promotes the use of local wood in the construction of traditional boats, uniting tradition, culture, and innovation.
  • Rodrigo Mosquera | TresOficios: artisan cabinetmaker, specializing in the design and creation of unique pieces in solid wood. A defender of traditional construction systems, he is also known for his educational work through talks and workshops.

During the event, attendees can enjoy a food area with snacks and lunch options. There will also be a local craft exhibition, where visitors can discover unique products made by local professionals.
