Bioblitz in Araño: citizen science to discover local biodiversity

The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory is organizing a participatory biodiversity identification event, coordinated by the Montescola Foundation in collaboration with the Araño CMVMC.

April 14, 2025 – Next Sunday, April 20, at 10:30 a.m., a new citizen science event will be held in Araño (Rianxo), promoted by the Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory. The meeting point will be the Campo da Festa do Araño, from where the activity will begin.

The event is coordinated by the Montescola Foundation in collaboration with the Common Land Community of Araño, which supports this initiative to understand and appreciate its natural heritage.

A Bioblitz is a participatory biodiversity identification event, in which experts and local residents collaborate to record as many species as possible present in a natural area during a set amount of time. The activity will feature a multidisciplinary group of experts in botany, entomology, ornithology, and mycology.

It is open to the general public, with no prior knowledge required, and seeks to bring local biodiversity closer to the public. Those interested can register until Friday, April 18, by sending an email to info@montescola.org.

The Araño ‘monte’ is home to areas of a great environmental value that is still largely unknown, such as the middle and upper reaches of the Te River and its valley, where the Pozo Bastón is located, or the valley formed by the Muíño do Conde stream, all places of great ecological and scenic interest.

Barbanza Ecosocial Lab has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) of the Government of Spain, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Coordinated by Fundación RIA, the Barbanza Ecosocial Lab is a project dedicated to promoting the transition towards environmental sustainability and strengthening resilience in the territorial management of the Barbanza common land.
