Educating for a Sustainable Future in Rianxo's common lands

The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory is organizing its fourth educational event in February in collaboration with schools in the municipality of Rianxo, coordinated by the Montescola Foundation.

February 28, 2025 – The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory held its fourth educational event this February, this time in Isorna, with the participation of sixth-grade students from the CEIP ADR Castelao in Rianxo. The activity was coordinated by the Montescola Foundation, in collaboration with the Isorna Common Land Community (CMVMC) and the Plataforma pola Defensa do Monte, and with the valuable support of the O Barbanza Forest District.

The event was packed with educational activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness and knowledge about sustainable forest management. One of the highlights was the planting of native hardwood trees, in which the students actively participated, thus contributing to the ecological recovery of the woodland.

To facilitate this task, a specialized team from the Forestry District accompanied the group to assist with planting. The team also organized a demonstration of a water pump, and the children had the opportunity to experience firsthand the use of a hose, which allowed them to better understand the important work of fire prevention and extinguishing.

These types of initiatives allow schools to incorporate activities at the common lands into their programs, bringing new generations closer to the reality of sustainable forest management and raising awareness about the importance of protecting our local ecosystems.

Lucía R. Cao, representative of the Montescola Foundation, highlighted the importance of these activities: “It is essential to convey to children the importance of working in the common lands, since they are the future of our communities.” This organization, a partner in the Laboratory project, has spent years promoting the value of community work in wood lands and care for nature. These outreach activities foster respect for the environment and strengthen the sense of belonging in the territory.

Barbanza Ecosocial Lab has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) of the Government of Spain, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Coordinated by Fundación RIA, the Barbanza Ecosocial Lab is a project dedicated to promoting the transition towards environmental sustainability and strengthening resilience in the territorial management of the Barbanza common land.
