February 20, 2025 – The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory organized three educational workshops this week at schools in the municipality of Rianxo. These activities are part of the Laboratory’s line of action 5, led by the Montescola Foundation, which aims to strengthen networking and foster connections between local initiatives by launching an educational innovation program associated with territorial management and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Yesterday’s workshop was held in Isorna and was attended by fifth-grade students from the CEIP ADR Castelao de Rianxo. The initiative was coordinated by Montescola, in collaboration with the Common Land Community (CMVMC) of Isorna and the Plataforma pola Defensa do Monte, with support from the Barbanza Forest District.
During the day, various educational activities were carried out to promote environmental awareness and knowledge about forest management. In addition, schoolchildren actively participated in planting native deciduous species, thus contributing to the ecological recovery of the ‘monte’. This initiative seeks to raise awareness among younger generations about the importance of sustainable management in our ‘montes’ and the protection of local ecosystems.
A total of 50 children had the opportunity to learn about the operation of the CMVMC and understand the importance of sustainable land management. The Forest District provided support with a specialized team that assisted with the planting and organized a demonstration of how a motorized pump works. The students were able to experience firsthand the use of a hose, which allowed them to better understand the work of fire prevention and extinguishing.
The activity was initially scheduled to be repeated today, February 20th, with the sixth-grade group, but due to the forecast of rain, the day had to be postponed until further notice.
The other two days led by Montescola took place last Monday, February 17th, in collaboration with the Galician Farmers’ Union. They were held at the CEP Xosé Mª Brea Segade and Monte Vivo training centers of the IES Félix Muriel, and addressed the fundamental role of women in the primary sector and their contribution to the sustainability and revitalization of the Galician region.
Barbanza Ecosocial Lab has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) of the Government of Spain, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
Coordinated by Fundación RIA, the Barbanza Ecosocial Lab is a project dedicated to promoting the transition towards environmental sustainability and strengthening resilience in the territorial management of the Barbanza common land.
