Second day of invasive species elimination in the Isorna common land

The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory is holding a new acacia tree elimination day in Isorna, coordinated by the Montescola Foundation as part of its environmental volunteer program.

November 11, 2024 – The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory is holding a new environmental volunteer day in collaboration with the Montescola Foundation, the entity responsible for the project’s community planning, volunteering, and environmental education activities. This day will take place on November 23rd in Isorna (Rianxo, A Coruña), with the meeting point in Souto de Isorna at 10:00 a.m.

Interested parties must register in advance by sending an email to info@montescola.org by Thursday, November 21st. The activity is open to people of all ages, and in appreciation, a light meal will be offered to participants at the conclusion of the day’s work.

To date, more than 400 people have participated in the Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory’s volunteer days. This will be the project’s 14th volunteer activity this year and the second in the parish of Isorna (the first took place on August 10th). These activities seek to raise awareness among the public about the importance of biodiversity recovery and collaborative forest fire prevention.

The goal of the day is to eliminate the last remaining patches of black locust (Acacia melanoxylon), a species listed in the Catalogue of Invasive Species in Spain. Erradication efforts directed towards these sprouts, whose rapid growth represents a challenge, are essential to controlling the spread of this invasive species before they reach large sizes and compromise the balance of the local ecosystem.

Barbanza Ecosocial Lab has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) of the Government of Spain, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Coordinated by Fundación RIA, the Barbanza Ecosocial Lab is a project dedicated to promoting the transition towards environmental sustainability and strengthening resilience in the territorial management of the Barbanza common land.
