28 de octubre 2024 — The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory is holding the second ‘Xornadas por un Monte Vivo’ (Day for a Living Common Land) in Leiro, Rianxo, next Saturday, November 2nd. It will be a day full of free activities open to the public. Advance registration is mandatory and can be made by emailing info@barbanzaecosocial.org.

Next Saturday morning’s activities will take place on the esplanade behind the Leiro Rectory, with a program that includes children’s activities, black locust removal work, and demonstrations of communal grazing and wood processing. There will also be a visit to the experimental chestnut plantation at the Lourizán CIF.

In the afternoon, the talks and debates will be at the Vicente Vidal Cultural Center, and the day will conclude with musical festivities. The lunch will be shared and will include a tasting of local products, such as horse meat from the Baroña common land community and goat meat from the communities of the Plataforma pola Defensa do Monte.

These sessions are being held after the first eight months of the project, sponsored by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), as a small-scale showcase of the project’s progress during this period. After being selected in the forest bioeconomy open call, the Laboratory received almost €2 million in European funds to work in the Rianxo ‘montes’ with the goals of generating employment and economic opportunities, conserving biodiversity, and preventing forest fires.
