October 28, 2024 —This last Sunday in October, the first ‘Xornadas polo Monte Vivo’ (Day for a Living Common Land) was held in Taragoña, an event organized by the project’s partner organizations at Campo Maneiro. The day began with several training and outreach sessions on ‘monte’ sustainability and the different uses and benefits that can be developed beyond traditional logging.
One of the highlights was the demonstration by the Baroña common land community, which showed the operation of its portable sawmill and the pine resin-tapping technique, an essential process for the efficient use of wood. Lunch was provided by the Curral do Marqués restaurant, which prepared dishes with ingredients from the ‘montes’, highlighting the value of local produce.
The day concluded with a guided tour of the forestry work carried out in the common lands managed by the Plataforma pola Defensa do Monte, explaining the importance of this work and the evolution of biodiversity in the area. The tour included a visit to the Castro Barbudo viewpoint, where the O Baixo Ulla Association interpreted the landscape through the different historical layers of the area.
Barbanza Ecosocial Lab has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) of the Government of Spain, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
Coordinated by Fundación RIA, the Barbanza Ecosocial Lab is a project dedicated to promoting the transition towards environmental sustainability and strengthening resilience in the territorial management of the Barbanza common land.
