The Laboratory invites Barbanza common land comunities to participate in a composting workshop in Baroña
The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory promotes composting in common land comunities as part of the project’s activities, focusing on the transformation and development of forest resources.
The valorization of locally sourced agricultural and forestry waste represents an opportunity for multifunctional common land management, leveraging this resource for fertilizing forest plantations and restoring degraded soils.
October 28, 2024 — The workshop took place yesterday at the Baroña Processing Center (Porto do Son, A Coruña), beginning at 9:00 a.m. The activity was open to all common land comunities and organizations interested in agrocomposting.
During the day, a practical demonstration showed the process of transforming local forest and livestock waste through composting for use in forest plantations and soil regeneration.
The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory aims to raise awareness among common land comunities about the use of agricultural and forestry waste for compost production.
The activities for transforming and valorizing common land resources are part of Action 3 of the project, coordinated by the Plataforma pola Defensa do Monte. Through the Laboratory, demonstration and training activities on composting will be carried out in the partner communities, with the aim of promoting implementation in other locations. Along these lines, all communities in the region are invited to participate in a composting workshop in the common land of the Baroña community.
The personnel hired within the framework of the project are taking a Basic Master’s Course in Composting taught by Amigas da Terra. The objective is to acquire the necessary skills to manage the forest waste cycle, from its collection to composting to the application of the final product for the regeneration of degraded areas or the planting of forest vegetation.
The Baroña common land community, which provided the space and resources necessary for the test, sees the recovery of organic waste generated in its common land as an opportunity to transform it into compost. They are also exploring the possibility of establishing a small composting plant.
Amigas da Terra has extensive experience in composting projects since 2005, collaborating with more than 20 municipalities in the four Galician provinces. They have also participated in the Revitaliza Plan, where they implemented composting projects in four municipalities, serving as part of its team. The training they provide is key to ensuring the success of these initiatives.
Barbanza Ecosocial Lab has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) of the Government of Spain, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
Coordinated by Fundación RIA, the Barbanza Ecosocial Lab is a project dedicated to promoting the transition towards environmental sustainability and strengthening resilience in the territorial management of the Barbanza common land.
