Announcing the first of many volunteer days at the Laboratory

The Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory is launching a series of volunteer days in Barbanza with the aim of involving citizens in the restoration of biodiversity.

April 8, 2024 — Following the public presentation of the project last Thursday in the Rianxo Municipality, the Barbanza Ecosocial Laboratory is holding its first volunteer day in the Barbanza ‘montes’ to eliminate invasive exotic species and plant native hardwood trees.

The activity marks the beginning of a series of volunteer days to be held in the Barbanza ‘montes’ organized by the Montescola Foundation, the entity in charge of the Laboratory’s community foresight, volunteering, and environmental education activities. The aim is to involve citizens in the restoration of biodiversity, strengthening collaborative networks within the community.

This first activity will take place on the morning of Sunday, April 14, in Froxán (Lousame), and will focus on removing acacia trees and planting maple trees. Open to the public of all ages, the activity provides an opportunity to learn how to debark acacia trees and to participate in the planting of fifty maple trees in an area where Montescola has been working in recent years to eliminate invasive species and restore biodiversity.

Those interested can register for the activity by sending an email to info@montescola.org before Friday the 12th. In appreciation, a light meal will be offered to participants at the conclusion of the day’s work.

Barbanza Ecosocial Lab has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) of the Government of Spain, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Coordinated by Fundación RIA, the Barbanza Ecosocial Lab is a project dedicated to promoting the transition towards environmental sustainability and strengthening resilience in the territorial management of the Barbanza common land.
